William Morgan  was considered a bright  Mason  for his ability to recite ritual  without prompting.  When Masons in Batavia, NY in 1826 denied him advancement to higher degrees he vowed to publish all he knew of the  "secret" rituals. Before his book was published, he disappeared. A public furor against Freemasons followed his disappearance. Freemasons were labeled anti-democratic - and later anti-Christian.  The public protest spilled into  local elections with opposition to electing anyone who was a Freemason. The protest evolved to the county and the state levels with the formation of the Antimasonry Party.  When the party grew to the  national level it became, in 1832, the first third party to nominate a Presidential candidate.  The mystery of Morgan's disappearance was never solved.
